Contribution to Optica Biophotonics Congress

Sara had the opportunity to present our most recent results on speckle-based multimodal tomography of the human cerebellum at the Optica Biophotonics Congress that took place on 24-27 April 2023 in Vancouver!  🧠🔬 Three-dimensional visualization of human cerebellar tissue, down to cellular levels, has the potential to uncover morphological alterations that may be associated with neurological diseases.… Continue reading Contribution to Optica Biophotonics Congress

Ptychography reconstruction package “ptypy” now available online

Our ptychography reconstruction package ptypy is now open-source and online! The package has come a long way since its debut at the cSAXS beamline at the Swiss Light Source. The difference map reconstruction algorithm was first implemented in MATLAB with contributions from Martin Dierolf, Andreas Menzel and Cameron Kewish. Its descendant is still in used by the cSAXS… Continue reading Ptychography reconstruction package “ptypy” now available online

New publication about speckle-based imaging for directional dark-field

Composite image showing the diverse directional dark-field information extracted from the examined sample, a series of hollow carbon fibre composite tubes. The main scattering direction, which is orthogonal to the fibers and thus the axes of the cylinders, is shown by the hue, while the overall scattering strength is encoded by the “value” of the colors (i.e., weak or no scatter appears as black), and the degree of the signal’s directionality is given by the colors’ saturation. Faster, improved version of UMPA now available on GitHub!

Photo and UMPA-processed image signals of a speckle-based dataset of a small flower, measured with the new sample-stepping technique at P05, PETRA III, DESY. The sample is much larger than the detector field of view (shown as the red rectangle).

Ginevra and Marco join the team!

Two new PhD students just joined the group! Ginevra Lautizi, who just graduated from the University of Trieste, and Marco Margini, from the University of Padova. Ginevra will be working on directional dark-field imaging and tomography, Marco on incoherent and coherent scattering in the context of speckle-based imaging and ptychography.

Physics Today article on ptychography

Diffraction patterns from a ptychography experiment.

In this month’s issue of Physics Today, an article written by Prof. Thibault and long-time collaborator Manuel Guizar-Sicairos (Paul Scherrer Institut, Swizerland) presents a review of ptychography. In only 15 years, this imaging technique has become the method offering the highest resolution in 2d and 3d for both X-ray and electron microscopy. The development of… Continue reading Physics Today article on ptychography

Outreach talk at Trieste’s Adriaco

Prof. Thibault giving an outreach talk about X-ray science and climate change in an invited talk organised by Marevivo

Prof. Thibault was invited by the Regional division of the association Marevivo to give an outreach talk about our recent work using X-rays to help the study of starfish specimens from the Norwegian and Barents seas. The talk was an opportunity to highlight two momentous 125th anniversaries: the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen,… Continue reading Outreach talk at Trieste’s Adriaco
